THE GREEN HORNET

Superhero movie it is, but slightly different from what’s been around before. The Green Hornet is an alter ego of Britt Reid (newspaper publisher by day) who feels this urgent need to fight the crime in the city where he works and lives. None would be possible if he didn’t have Kato by his side in his eye mask and gloves and their super fast, ultra cool Black Beauty – a motor vehicle loaded with heavy machinery. Fighting the crime in a not so conventional way makes The Green Hornet different from other movies. If it will bring greater good, breaking the law and the rules is sometimes allowed.

The Green Hornet - Overview

Britt Reid (Seth Rogen) is the son of a prominent and wealthy newspaper owner, and he is living up to his critical father's poor expectations of him. Britt is the ultimate party guy, taking advantage of all the indulgences life affords him and never lifting a finger for it. But, when his father dies unexpectedly, Britt is left in charge of his father's life's work. Of course, Britt doesn't take his new position seriously, and he even teams up with his father's most inventive and intriguing employee, Kato (Jay Chou), to show the old man what he really thought of him.
In the midst of their little crime, however, they run into trouble. Thankfully, Kato saves the day. When Britt is introduced to Kato's amazing martial arts skills, an idea forms -- with Kato's inventive genius and martial arts skills, and Britt's position of power, the two could work together to become vigilante crime fighters. With the help of Britt's intelligent secretary Lenore (Cameron Diaz), The Green Hornet (Britt) and his nameless sidekick (Kato) begin making trouble for LA's criminal element.
Finally, the Green Hornet hits the heart of crime in the city, coming too close to home for the man who prides himself on being the king of the crime-laden LA underworld, Benjamin Chudnofsky (Christoph Waltz). Chudnofsky vows to eliminate the Green Hornet, and Britt and Kato begin to uncover a complexity to the criminal network that they hadn't expected. The two vigilantes may have gotten themselves in way over their heads, and their actions may end up doing more harm than good.

The Green Hornet - Guide Review for Parents

Superhero themed movies are always going to be attractive to kids, and parents might find some PG-13 super flicks to be okay for kids. Viewers may get stung if they go to The Green Hornet expecting a funny version of Spider Man, though. The Green Hornet is a snarky spoof on the superhero genre, but on my first impression of the movie, I wondered if the ratings committee had been gassed by the Green Hornet when they chose not to give the movie an "R" rating. However, the language in the movie excludes the "F word," so though it did not garner the "R," it is still extremely hard and crude, and various profanities are used excessively throughout.
This is a movie I would have walked out of if I hadn't been reviewing it. Even considering an adult audience, the movie starts out funny and even kind of clever, but as the language takes a dive, so does the plot, and the movie turns into a never ending scene of back and forth violence and destruction. Kept to a minimum, the scenes which spoof the intense car chases and good guy versus bad guy fighting that go on in other action movies would have been more fun to watch. But, it goes on and on, and eventually it just gets tiring.
Violence in the movie is intense and unrelenting, however there is a bit of a slapstick note to much of it. Some characters die, and one is even stabbed in the eyes. Throughout all of this, there is little blood and gore, but the martial arts style fighting injected with humor might be highly tempting for kids to imitate. Violence (Extreme): The Green Hornet contains heavy violence from start to finish. Violence involves all kinds of guns, fire, explosives, and other weapons, along with heavy martial arts style hand to hand combat. The violence results in very little blood and gore, but there is a slapstick note to it, resulting in a heavy focus on the fighting, especially on martial arts movies that involve characters hitting, kicking, and smashing each other in the groin area. Several deaths occur in the movie, and one man is stabbed in both eyes and is shown falling to the ground with the sharp wooden objects embedded in his eye sockets. Heavy destruction to buildings, vehicles and everything else is shown.
Scary Scenes (High): While the above noted violent scenes may be scary for young kids, for a PG-13 movie, the scenes contain too much humor to truly terrify anyone older. Still, depictions of a gang harassing a couple, crime lords, drug labs, and more may be frightening or unsettling to some viewers.
Sex/Nudity (High): Lover boy Britt is shown carousing with many scantily clad women in his days as a party guy, and the movie depicts him waking up in bed with one of them. Several women in the movie wear low cut or otherwise revealing outfits. Britt and Kato think that Lenore is hot, and they constantly make comments and jokes containing innuendo about her and to her. Sexual hand gestures are use.

Drugs and Alcohol (High) Several scenes depict main characters drinking and partying. Characters are shown drinking beer throughout the movie. Also, the movie shows the Green Hornet and Kato busting into a drug lab. Drugs of various types and drug-related crime are discussed.
Language (Extreme): To say the language in this movie is extreme for a PG-13 rating is an understatement. The "f-word" is not used, but the "s-word," "a-word," both "b-words" and many more are used so many times I lost track. Also, profanity is used in crude phrases and insults, some of which kids may imitate. A few examples: "Kiss my a**. French kiss it. Tickle it with your gray whiskers." "I stacked you like a b****." "This is the balls!"
Disrespectful/Imitative Behavior (Extreme): The crime fighting vigilante main characters are shown doing heavy partying, fighting, using weapons, lying, sexually harassing, and joking about it all throughout the movie.
Sad/Unsettling Scenes (Medium): Britt's father's death and funeral are depicted in the movie. Britt and Kato get into a fight over Lenore.
